Beating the Heat: Cool Roofing Brings 7–8°C Relief in Nanded

In a powerful example of climate innovation delivering real impact, a “Cool Roofing” initiative in Nanded has successfully reduced indoor temperatures by an impressive 7 to 8°C, offering much-needed relief to vulnerable communities during peak summer.

Led by Sanskriti Samvardhan Mandal, Sagroli, in collaboration with Practical Action (PAC) and the All India Disaster Mitigation Institute (AIDMI), this initiative is part of a broader Nature-Based Solutions approach aimed at tackling extreme heat in urban low-income settlements.

Under this program, cool roofing technology has been applied to the rooftops of small and low-rise houses across multiple localities in the city. The results have been remarkable—homes that once trapped intense heat are now significantly cooler, creating safer and more comfortable living environments.

Approximately 100 families, including daily wage earners and small business owners, are directly benefiting from this intervention. Not only has it improved living conditions, but it has also enhanced productivity, as reduced indoor heat has made small workspaces more manageable during harsh summer days.

On April 22, Hon. District Collector of Nanded, Mr. Rahul Kardile (IAS), visited beneficiaries in the Vishnunagar area to assess the impact firsthand. Residents shared their experiences, highlighting the noticeable drop in indoor temperatures and expressing heartfelt appreciation for the initiative.

This effort stands as a replicable and sustainable model—demonstrating how simple, cost-effective, and eco-friendly solutions can significantly improve the quality of life for urban poor communities while addressing the growing challenges of climate change.

The visit was attended by key team members including SSM’s Director Mr. Rohit Deshmukh, Program Manager Mr. Sarjerao Dhawale, Communications Manager Mr. Sachin Yermalkar, along with AIDMI’s Technical Coordinator Ms. Arundhati Swami, Field Coordinator Ms. Shubhangi Jallewar, and team members Mr. Subhash Waghmare and Mr. Chakradhar Puyad.

A cooler roof, a healthier home, and a brighter future—one community at a time.
